Philly Freeway Hosts 3rd Annual Philly Free Fest as Beanie Sigel, M.O.P. and More Celebrate the Community of Philadelphia

By Carisha J.

Philadelphia’s hip-hop culture was on full display this weekend as Philly Freeway brought together music, health, and community for the 3rd Annual Philly Free Fest at the Philadelphia Navy Yard. The free event welcomed thousands of residents for a day of entertainment, education, and empowerment, proving that the city’s biggest stars remain deeply connected to the neighborhoods that raised them.

The festival featured headline performances from Freeway, Beanie Sigel, M.O.P., and other artists, creating an unforgettable soundtrack for a day that celebrated Philadelphia pride. Alongside the live performances, attendees enjoyed local vendors, family-friendly activities, community organizations, and resources designed to improve the well-being of residents.

What sets Philly Free Fest apart is its purpose. Hosted through Freedom Thinkers Inc. in partnership with Philadelphia City Council President Kenyatta Johnson, the annual event was created to connect families with valuable services while creating a positive space where culture and community intersect.

Health and wellness remained the centerpiece of this year’s festival. Guests had access to free health screenings, mental health resources, organ donor awareness, health education, children’s health services, and wellness activities, including a Cardio Sculpt session with Coach Zha. The event also featured youth programming, arts and crafts, children’s books, financial planning resources, community organizations, and local businesses showcasing their products and services.

For Freeway, the mission is personal.

After publicly sharing his own battle with hypertension and diabetes, the Philadelphia rapper has become an advocate for preventative healthcare through Freedom Thinkers Academy, an initiative that blends music, culture, and health education to encourage people to take control of their wellness.

One of the day’s most heartfelt moments came as Freeway reflected on the loss of his son, whose decision to become an organ donor continues to inspire others.

“My son was a hero.”

He shared that his son saved four lives through organ donation, with recipients receiving two kidneys, one lung, and one liver. The emotional story reinforced why organ donor awareness remains such an important part of Free Fest each year.

Freeway also made sure to show love to his hometown by recognizing several of his favorite Philadelphia artists, including Ms. Jade, Nina Ross, Rocky, and Kur, highlighting the city’s rich musical legacy and its next generation of talent.

In May 2024, the Philadelphia City Council honored Freeway by proclaiming June 1 as “Philadelphia Freeway Day.” Inspired by the recognition, he partnered with Council President Kenyatta Johnson to launch Philly Free Fest, which has grown into one of the city’s premier community celebrations.

As the third annual festival came to a close, one message stood above the music: Philly Freeway is using his platform to build something much bigger than a concert. By combining entertainment with education, health awareness, and community outreach, he continues to create a lasting impact—one that extends far beyond the stage.
